Der Sommer kommt... -summer's coming!

Es ist Ende November und es ist warm in Sucre. Heute (27.11.15) war mein letzter Arbeitstag mit den Mädels im Misk’y Wasi, denn heute beginnen die Sommerferien. Die haben sowohl die Mädels als auch wir als Personal besonders nötig. Der letzte Monat war wirklich anstrengend, nervenaufreibend und mit viel Arbeit verbunden. Eine Zusammenfassung in Bildern:

It’s the end of November and it’s warm in Sucre. Today was my last day of work together with the girls in the Misk’y Wasi because today the summer holidays start. The girls need them just as much as the staff- the last month was really tiring, nerve-wracking and loads of work. A summary in pictures:

Wenn keine Hausaufgaben, tägliche Verpflichtungen oder von Ana und mir gemachten Aktivitäten anstanden, dann mussten Weihnachtskarten gebastelt werden. Die Fundación Amazonia erhält seit 2012 keine finanzielle Unterstützung mehr aus Spanien und muss sich eigenständig über Wasser halten. Zusätzlich zu den Benefizveranstaltungen und dem Brotverkauf werden nun zu Weihnachten auch handgemachte Weihnachtskarten verkauft. Im nächsten Jahr werden sie auch über mich  in Deutschland erhältlich sein- also schon mal für den nächsten Dezember vormerken, bitte.:P

When there was no homework to do, no obligations or activities planned by Ana and me, Christmas cards had to be made. The Fundación Amazonia doesn’t receive any financial support from Spain any more since 2012 and hast to auto-sustain itself. That is why in addition to the charity-events and selling bread during the year handmade Christmas cards are sold. Next year they will also be available via me in Germany- please keep that in mind until next December. :P

Dienstag- und Donnerstagmorgen: Frühsport. Leider konnte ich die letzten zwei Wochen nicht mehr selber mitmachen, da ich krank war. Vielen Dank also an Ana, die das Ganze dann alleine mit den Mädchen gemacht hat.

Tuesday and Thursday: morning exercise. Unfortunately I couldn’t participate myself the last two weeks because I was sick. Thanks to Ana who then did it alone with the girls.

Ironischerweise hatte ich diesen Monat während ich selber krank war auch die meisten Arzttermine mit den Kindern oder für die Kinder. Das Schwierige ist nämlich, dass die Mädels nicht versichert sind und von der Fundación auch kein Versicherungsschutz gewährleistet wird. Zum Glück gibt es von der bolivianischen Regierung ein Programm namens „Mi Salud“- meine Gesundheit. Mit diesem Programm haben Menschen ohne Versicherung und finanzielle Möglichkeiten die Chance einer Behandlung gratis. Der Nachteil daran ist das viele Hin- und Her-Rennen. Man muss viele Nachweise und Kopien mitbringen. In jedem Krankenhaus, in dem ich bisher war, wollten sie etwas unterschiedliche Nachweise haben. Das bedeutet häufig Hinfahren, lange warten, wenige Minuten nachfragen, zurück fahren, Anträge bzw. Nachweise schreiben, wieder hinfahren, einreichen…- und dann fehlt womöglich wieder etwas, sodass das Ganze von vorne losgeht. Mir erscheint es manchmal frustrierend, da ich wenn ich all diese Dinge für ein Mädchen mache, nichts für die restlichen 32 machen kann. Und häufig hat man nach vielem Nachfragen und Hin- und Hergelaufe auch nicht viel erreicht. Ich merke also wie viel bequemer ein Leben mit Geld bzw. mit Versicherung ist!

Was mich daher besonders wundert ist, dass seit es die Fundación Amazonia gibt, keine Vereinbarungen mit Ärzten oder Krankenhäusern getroffen wurden. Momentan behandelt Dr. Beckerth, der Vositzende des Rotary-Clubs Sucre meine Mädels, aber erst wenn es notwendig ist. Ich würde mir wünschen, dass es gar nicht erst zu der Notwendigkeit käme und wir präventiv agierten, da viele der Probleme wie Gastritis und Karies vermeidbar scheinen.

Ironically during this month when I myself was sick I had loads of doctor appointments with or for the children. The difficulty is that the girls have no insurance and the Fundación doesn’t cover any inssurance for them either. Luckily the Bolivian government has a social support programme called “Mi salud“- my health. With this programme people without insurance or money have the possibilty to receive gratis treatments. The disadvantage of this programme is that to apply for it, I have to run back and forth a lot. It requires loads of certificates, references and copies. And in every hospital that I was in until now they required different documents. That means loads of times: going to the hospital, waiting a long time, asking, going back, writing the requests/copying documents, again going tot he hospital, handing in…- and possibly there is still something missing then, so that the things repeat themselves. Sometimes it seems frustrating to me, because when I do all this for the treatment of one girl, I can’t do anything fort he other 32 girls. And often I haven’t achieved much after asking and running back and forth the whole day because there is still something missing and I will have to wait until the next day. I really appreciate and notice the comfort of having an insurance!

Because of that I wonder why since the Fundación Amazonia exists, there are no established conventions with doctors or hospitals to assure the health of the kids. At the moment Dr. Beckerth, president of Rotary Club Sucre is doing the treatments oft he kids, but unfortunately only when it is already necessary. I’d wish we could work preemptively because loads of phenomenoms such as gastritis and caries seem avoidable with an integral support (in education, hygiene, love etc.). Influencing those factors is easier said than done because “every child is it’s own world“ like I already said last month and moreover we are only the two of us as staff for this year.

Dr. Beckerth ist unglaublich warmherzig, engagiert und mir eine große Hilfe. Er hat den Kontakt zu dem Arzt hergestellt, der Sofía operieren wird;  als ich ihm von den schwarzen Karies-Zähnen der Mädels erzählte, schlug er vor ein Abkommen mit der Fakultät der Zahnmedizin zu treffen, um die Behandlungen gratis zu bekommen.
Dr. Beckerth is really warm-hearted, hard-working and loads of help to me. He made contact to the oculist, that will operate Sofía’s cataract; when I told him about the black caries-teeth, he proposed to make a convention with the faculty of odontology to receive gratis treatments from them.
Das Abkommen wird allerdings erst im nächsten Jahr in Kraft treten. Diesen Monat hatten wir nun aber schon einen Notfall.

Unfortunately this convention will come into effect next year but we already had an emergency this month.

Die Wange sah am nächsten Morgen noch viel schlimmer aus, Rosalia konnte gar nicht schlafen vor Schmerz. Die Mädchen haben Gruppenzimmer, das heißt, wenn sie nicht schlafen kann, dann muss sie still ausharren, denn noch haben wir den von Vanesa und mir geplanten Aufenthaltsraum/ Wohnzimmer nicht. Es ist also höchste Zeit für die Ferien, damit wir alles herrichten, verändern und planen können, wie wir es den Kindern geben möchten.

- The cheek looked much worse the next morning and Rosalia couldn’t even sleep because of pain. The girls share bedrooms which means she had to hold out quietly because the by Vanesa and me planned recreation room doesn’t exist yet. It’s high time for vacation so we can change, renovate, establish and plan everyting the way we want to offer it to the kids.

Was mich außerdem wundert ist, dass ich als Freiwillige immer alleine mit den Kindern zum Arzt muss und alles für sie regeln soll. Zunächst ist es schwierig, da ich nicht die Erziehungsberechtigte bin. Und dann fände ich es wichtig, dass die Eltern zeigten, dass sie sich um ihre Kinder sorgen. Natürlich ist es verständlich, wenn sie die Kinder nicht zum Arzt begleiten können, da sie arbeiten. Dafür bin ich ja auch hier. Trotzdem denke ich, dass nachfragen und sich nach den Behandlungen erkundigen wichtig ist. Das habe ich bislang nur einmal erlebt. Faktoren, welche das vermeiden können zum einen die Sprache sein (viele der Eltern sprechen Quechua) und die Angst vor den anfallenden Kosten (da wie gesagt auch von der Fundación kein Geld für die Behandlungen zur Verfügung steht).  Ich hoffe dies im nächsten Jahr gemeinsam mit Dr. Beckerth und meiner Chefin Vanesa bewältigen zu können, um stärker mit den Familien zusammen zu arbeiten und nachhaltige Erfolge zu erzielen.

Auf dem Foto: Sofías Mutter musste mit ins Krankenhaus, um den OP-Vertrag zu unterschreiben. Das war allerdings ein einziges Mal von unzähligen Malen, die ich nun schon mit Sofía wegen des grauen Starrs unterwegs war. Die Planung der OP Absprachen mit den Ärzten, die ebenfalls ich treffen muss. Sofías Fall ist besonders kompliziert, da sie in einem normalen Krankenhaus (Sta. Barbara) und nicht im Kinderkrankenhaus operiert werden soll. Auch der Chirurg wusste nicht, was alles noch bis zu der OP zu klären ist (Kinder-Anästhesisten beantragen, messen, Räume reservieren etc.), sodass die Sozialarbeiterin des Krankenhauses mir freundlicherweise viel geholfen hat das alles herauszubekommen. Die Anträge lassen ebenfalls auf sich warten, es fehlen Unterschriften o.ä. Das alles ist immer eine große Herausforderung für mich, da ich selbst zu Hause in Deutschland nicht wüsste wo die Dinge zu erfragen und beantragen wären. Glücklicherweise begegnen mir aber viele Menschen sehr freundlich.

What also surprises me is that I as a volunteer am always going to the doctors alone with the kids and I shall arrange everything fort hem. That is difficult first of all because I am not their legal tutor or parent. And then I find it imortant that their parents show affection for their kids. Of course it’s understandable when they can’t accompany their children to the doctor because of their work. That’s what I’m here for. But anyway I think that asking and being interested in the treatments is important. I the time that I’m here now I’ve had that once. Factors that avoid this action could on one hand be the language (most parents speak Quechua) and the fear of the upcoming cost for a treatment (because like said before the Findación Amazonia doesn’t cover the treatments). I really hope to overcome these obstacles together with Dr. Beckerth and my boss Vanesa to cooperate more with the families and to achieve sustainable results.

On the foto: Sofía’s Mum had to come with us tot he hospital to sign the surgery-contract. It was the first of one of the many times that I’ve been to appointments with or for Sofía. Planning the surgery includes loads of talks to the doctors that I have to attend. The case of Sofía is especially complicated because she will be operated in a normal hospital (Sta. Barbara, Sucre) instead of the children’s hopital. Not even the surgerist knew what to clarify and apply for before the surgery (childrens anesthesist, internation in the children‘s hospital and bringing her to the other one fort he surgery etc.). The social worker oft he hospital was really kind to help me find out all of that. All oft hat is a big challenge for me because even at home in Germany I wouldn’t know where to ask and appl for everything. Fortunately the people I encounter help me out very friendly.

Ich habe mich ungewollt zu der Zuständigen für der Gesundheit der Kinder entwickelt. Wenn ich ein Mädchen abhole um zum Arzt zu gehen, dann kommen fünf weitere auf mich zugelaufen und erzählen mir wo sie überall Schmerzen oder Wehwehchen hätten. Natürlich sind das nicht alles nur Schlimme Dinge, sondern es gibt auch die Fälle, wo ein Mädchen einfach nur möchte, dass auf sie geachtet und ihr zugehört wird. Aber nicht einmal das ist möglich zu bieten, wenn wir nur zu zweit arbeiten und es keine Regelungen bezüglich dessen gibt. 

Unintendely I have become the responsible for the girls‘ health. When I bring one girl to the doctor, then five others are running towards me telling me what kind of pain or sometimes also minor complaints they’d have. Of course they are not always really bad things, there are also cases when a kid only wants tob e regarded and taken care of. But not even only listening and comforting each one is possible when we are only the two of us working.

Wie man erahnen kann, werde ich einigen Herausforderungen gestellt. Während meiner Arbeit lerne ich viele neue Situationen kennen und lerne aber auch mich selber noch tiefgründiger kennen. Es sind nicht unbedingt neue Facetten, die ich entdecke, sondern meine Charaktereigenschaften, die ich meinte bereits gut zu kennen, die sich in dem Kontext hier nochmal verstärken. Das ist manchmal gar nicht so einfach. Damit ich abends gut abschalten konnte habe ich eine tolle Therapie gefunden: Fische malen. Sie sind einfach zu machen und zieren nun die Wände unseres zuvor  schlicht grauen Badezimmers in bunten Farben.  Die Idee kam nach unserer ersten Reise des workshops „Weltreise“, den Ana und ich mit den Kindern Ende Oktober begannen. Wir guckten uns den Planeten Erde generell und die Meere an. Unser Tisch im Studierzimmer wurde also zum Meer verwandelt. Die selbst-gebastelten Fische schmücken nun auch im Misk’y Wasi die Spiegel der dort sehr tristen Dusch- und Waschräume.

As you can see I’m facing quite some challenges here. During my work I am getting to know new situations but furthermore I am getting to know myself even more profoundly. There are not necessarily new facettes that I discover but instead my characteristics that I thought I’d knew and that are emphasized in the current context. Sometimes that’s not easy. To be able to shut off at night I found a great therapy: draw fishes! They are easy to make and now colour the walls of our before simply grey bathroom. The idea came after our first travel of the workshop “journey around the world“, that Ana and I started with the kids the end of October. We looked at the planet earth in general and the oceans. Our table in the study room developed into the sea. The self-made fishes are now also decorating the mirrors in the before dull Misk’y Wasi-washrooms.

Auch das Desinteresse kann ich nicht einfach so hinnehmen, sondern nehme es als Ansatzpunkt dafür, dass viele der Mädels aufgeweckt werden müssen. Sie sollen leben, nicht bloß existieren. Das muss ihnen in einem langen,vielfältigen Weg gezeigt werden. Nur so können sie ihre eigenen Persönlichkeiten weiterentwickeln und sich ihr Leben erfolgreich aufbauen.

Also the lack of interest I can’t accept, but instead I take it as a proof that loads of the girls need to be “woken up“. They should live and not only exist. That needs to be showed in long and diverse way. Only that way they can develop their own personalities further and establish their own lifes successfully.

Dann ging es auf nach Asien und Australien. Wir hatten sehr wenig Zeit und wollten bis Ende November alle Kontinente schaffen, weshalb wir nur kurze Abstecher auf die einzelnen Kontinente machten. Währenddessen fiel uns außerdem auf, dass wir mit zu vielen bisherigen Kenntnissen der Mädels gerechnet hatten. Aus ihren Schulbüchern erweckt sich der Eindruck die Kinder würden über andere Länder lernen, aber wir beobachteten das (wohl überall in der Welt verbreitete) Bildungshindernis: Nicht alles was gelehrt wird, wird auch gelernt bzw. verstanden. Darüber hinaus sind die Mädchen im Alter zwischen 6- 17 Jahren, was einen sehr unterschiedlichen Bildungsstand mit sich bringt. Wir versuchten den workshop altersgemäß anzupassen und teilten die Mädels in zwei Gruppen. Die Älteren, die morgens arbeiten gehen hatten somit abends ihre Stunde und die Jüngeren konnten morgens „auf Reise gehen“.

Then we went to Asia and Australia. We had little time and wanted to finish with all continents, which was why we only did short travels to the continents. During the journey we noticed that we had planned with too much knowledge of the girls. From their school books we got the impression the kids learned about other countries, but we observed the (perhaps everywhere around the world) typical obstacle in education: Not everything that is taught is also understood or learnt. Moreover the girls are between six and seventeen years old, which implies a fairly different knowledge. We tried to match the workshop with their age and divided them into two “travelling groups“.

 

Es war wirklich viel Aufwand und wenig Zeit, aber es war uns wichtig die Basics zu vermitteln. Immer wieder war es schwierig, wenn uns nur wenige der Kinder ihre Aufmerksamkeit schenkten, wenn wieder und wieder dieselben Stereotypen und Vorurteile aufkamen. Aber genau das war unsere Motivation: wir konnten nicht tatenlos zusehen, wenn für Kinder Asien lediglich China ist, wenn man in Spanien angeblich nur Englisch spricht oder Kontinent und Land dasselbe sind (um nur wenige Beispiele zu nennen).

It really was little time for such a time-consuming project but it was important to us to impart the basics. Again and again it was difficult when only few of the kids gave us their attention or when again and again the same stereotypes and prejudices appeared. But exactly this was and is the motivation: Ana and I couldn’t watch inactively when for the girls Asia is only China, when English is suppposedly the official language spoken in Spain or when continent and country are the same (to give only a few of the many examples).

aufbauen. Weitere Herausforderungen: Die farbige Weltkarte im Bild rechts zu sehen, das Abschiedsgeschenk von Ana als sie letztes Jahr bereits hier war. Leider wurde aber nicht gut aufgepasst, jemand hat sie von der Wand gerissen und halb kaputt in einen Schrank im Büro gestopft. Vanesa, Ana und ich waren alle drei geschockt, wie mit den Dingen manchmal umgegangen wird. Man muss den Dingen aus Sicht der Kinder einen persönlichen Wert geben, damit sie mit Vorsicht behandelt werden und das ist wie oben beschrieben schwieriger als getan. Wir wollten uns nicht entmutigen lassen und haben gleich zwei andere Versionen der Weltdarstellung angeboten: die noch zu dekorierenden Zeitungspapier-Kontinente und selbstgemachte Globusse.

More challenges: the coloured world map in the picture on the right-hand side was the farewell-gift from Ana when she had been here the first time.

 

Unfortunately the map wasn’t taken care of, someone ripped it off the wall and left it damaged in a cupboard in the office. Vanesa, Ana and I were shocked the three of how sometimes the stuff is treated. The things have to have  personal value to the kids so they take care of it and like described that is harder than thought. We didn’t want to loose faith which was why we offered two new versions of world depictions: the still-to-be-decorated continents cut out of newspaper and the selfmade globes.

Am Ende haben fünf der 33 Mädchen ihren Globus fertig bemalt, aber sie waren stolz und glücklich- genau wir Ana und ich. Im nächsten Jahr werde ich dann nach einer kurzen Wiederholung der Kontinente, workshops über einzelne Länder geben und weiter über Fortschritte berichten. Zur Motivation haben Ana und ich bei der Abschluss-Aktivität, einem Kontinente-Quiz, Reisepässe an die Mädels verteilt. Vielen von ihnen fehlt bei Eintritt in das Kinderheim Geburtsurkunde oder Personalausweis, sodass der Reisepass uns etwas Besonderes und Unbekanntes erschien. Jede absolvierte Reise wird dann ab Februar wie im echten Leben in den Reisepass eingetragen. (Das Projekt kann in verschiedenen Varianten, Zeitspannen und Größen umgesetzt werden. At the end five of the 33 girls finished painting their globes but they were proud and happy just like Ana and I were. Next year, after a short repetition of the continents I will then give workshops on countries in particular and of course report on the developments. For making the girls eager to participate Ana and I handed out self-made passports to them after the last activity: a continent-game/quiz.

Loads of the girls do not have any birth certificate or ID when entering the Hogar so we thought that a passport might seem something special and unknown. After the introduction workshops in January we will start travelling to the countries in February. Each participated travel will be registered in the passport- just like in real life when you cross borders. (The project can be realised in different manners, time periods and sizes. Unsere besondere Aktivität zum Ende des Jahres hatte ebenfalls etwas mit dem Erleben von Kulturen zu tun: wir gingen ins „Espacio Cultural Orígenes“ (www.espacioculturalorigenes.com). Orígenes ist eine Tanzshow, die Tänze zu traditioneller Musik mit tollen Choreographien und Kostümen aus ganz Bolivien zeigt. Nebenbei wird ein feines Abendessen serviert. Ich habe die Show bereits mehrfach geschaut und finde sie immer wieder beeindruckend.

An dieser Stelle möchte ich mich bei der Leitung des Kulturzentrums bedanken, die uns den Eintritt gratis gegeben hat und freundlicherweise auch einen Spezialpreis für das Abendessen gemacht hat, sodass wir den Abend alle gemeinsam genießen konnten. Besonders möchte ich einer der Tänzerinnen danken: Gabriela Caba Ferrufino, die das Ganze möglich gemacht hat.

Our special activity at the end of the year also had to do with experiencing cultures: we went tot he “Espacio Cultural Orígenes“ (www.espacioculturalorigenes.com). Orígenes is a dance-show, that shows Bolivian folkloric dances with awesome costumes to traditional music. Meanwhile they serve a fine dinner. I’ve seen the show more than once and I always find it impressive again.

I would like to thank the administration of the culture centre that let us all enter for free and gave us a special offer for the food, so we were able to enjoy the evening together. I would especially like to thank one of the dancers that made all the whole evening possible, her name is Gabriela Caba Ferrufino- thanks a million.

Es war wirklich ein tolles Erlebnis! Wenige Tage zuvor hatten die Kleineren als auch die Älteren jeweils Tanzveranstaltungen in der Schule, bei denen sie manche der bei Orígenes gezeigten Tänze tanzten. Diese nun von professionellen Tänzern zu sehen, war eine tolle Ergänzung!

It really was a great experience! A few days before the little ones as well as the older ones had dance- events in their schools where they themselves had to present some of the dances showed in Orígenes.

Da sich der Monat dem Ende zuneigte, war der Abend bei orígenes auch einer der letzten mit Ana als Kollegin hier in Bolivien. Sie ist mit ihren Ideen, ihrer Energie, ihrer realistischen Art und im Umgang mit den Kindern ein wahres Geschenk für das Misk’y Wasi gewesen. Mir hat sie viel gegeben beigebracht und wird weiterhin eine wichtige Ansprechpartnerin und Freundin sein.

Because it was getting tot he end oft he month, the evening at orígenes was also one oft he last ones with Ana here as a colleague in Bolivia. With her ideas, her energy, her realistic views and her connection tot he kids whe really was a gift for the Misk’y Wasi. She taught me a lot and will still be an important work partner from overseas as well as a good friend.
